About Grimston Garages
After the Second World War after leaving the army John Grimston came back
to Queensbury and started making asbestos panelled wood framed garages
from an old barn.
Through the 1950s he progressed to manufacturing the
concrete garages we are well known for. The 1960s were the hay day of the
concrete garages; at its peak Grimston garages of Queensbury were producing
100 garages a week. John became very wealthy and successful.
Unfortunately he died in 1971 after an accident on his boat, he left a wife and
young family.
The company still with the famous Grimston name changed hands and was
eventually taken over by a larger national company Nucrete (of Pudsey nr
Leeds) in 1980.
David Carol was the owner at this point and along with his sons and son in
law ran the business as Grimston Nucrete. In 1995 the company hit a few
problems and was split into Grimston now the refurbishment side of the
business (Grimston made over 100 000 garages in over 40 years). This side
of the business was taken over by the O’Brien family Jude and his son Shaun.
Jude had many years of experience in all aspects of manufacture and repairs
of Grimston garages and was the foreman. Shaun who is a qualified electrician
also had many years experience in every aspect of the installation and repair
of the garages. In 2010 Jude retired and the company is still owned and run by
Shaun O’Brien.
The new garages are still manufactured by Nucrete (the Carol family the two
sons Simon and Andrew). David passed away recently and is sadly missed as
he and john Grimston were cut from the same cloth, self made men of great
character.
In the key days of Grimston 40 garages a week were being produced. We are a family run business who believe our Commitment to customers is unequalled. On a much smaller scale now we offer a comprehensive service direct to the customers.
We no longer use agents, middle men, we deal direct and offer a complete package, removal of old garages, concrete base laying service and full installation.
